How to Choose Between German, American and British Hose Clamps? Features and Application Scenarios of Different Clamps

Release time:2026-07-13
When purchasing hose clamps, many people are confused by the categories of German type hose clamp, American type hose clamp, and British type hose clamp. Clamps that look similar have big differences in price and applicable scenarios. As a professional hose clamp manufacturer, TJBC will explain in detail the characteristics of different types of hose clamps today to help you choose the right product.

German Type Hose Clamp: Strong Fastening Force, Suitable for Medium and High Pressure Pipelines

German type hose clamp, also known as German style clamp, is one of the most widely used types in the industrial field. It features thick steel belt, embedded screw head design, uniform force during fastening, large locking torque, and good sealing performance. The steel belt width of German hose clamps is usually 9mm and 12mm, and the clamping range covers from 6mm to over 200mm.
German type hose clamps are especially suitable for medium and high pressure pipeline connections such as automotive pipelines, industrial equipment, and hydraulic systems. Especially under vibration conditions, German hose clamps have excellent anti-loosening performance. All German type hose clamps produced by TJBC are made of 304 stainless steel, with galvanized screws, strong rust resistance and stable torque, making them the first choice for many auto parts manufacturers.

American Type Hose Clamp: Perforated Design, Wide Adjustment Range

The biggest feature of American type hose clamps is that there are perforations on the steel belt, and the screw passes through the perforations for locking. The advantage of this design is that the adjustment range is very wide, one clamp can cover a relatively wide pipe diameter range, and has strong versatility. The steel belt of American hose clamps is relatively thin, and the cost is lower than that of German type clamps.
American type hose clamps are suitable for low-pressure scenarios such as water supply and drainage pipelines, ventilation ducts, agricultural irrigation, and household hardware where fastening force requirements are not particularly high. However, it should be noted that because of the perforations, American hose clamps are prone to steel belt breakage if you apply too much force when locking, so they are not recommended for high-pressure pipelines and places with strong vibration.

British Type Hose Clamp: Lightweight and Economical, Suitable for Low-Pressure Civil Scenarios

British type hose clamp, also known as galvanized iron clamp, was introduced to China from the UK in the early days. It features simple structure, mostly made of galvanized iron, low price, narrow steel belt, and relatively small locking force.
British type hose clamps are mainly used in some low-pressure, temporary fixing, and civil scenarios, such as washing machine inlet pipes, gas pipes (low pressure), simple water pipe connections, etc. Because it is made of galvanized iron, it is easy to rust in humid environments, so it is not suitable for outdoor and humid working conditions. At present, it has been gradually replaced by stainless steel hose clamps in the industrial field.

Three Key Points for Hose Clamp Selection

In addition to type selection, there are three points to note when choosing hose clamps: First, material. For humid or outdoor scenarios, be sure to choose 304 stainless steel, and 316 stainless steel for corrosive environments; Second, size. The clamping range of the hose clamp should be slightly larger than the outer diameter of the fixed pipe, do not choose the model that just fits the maximum or minimum diameter; Third, torque. Different types of hose clamps have recommended locking torque, do not over-tighten to cause thread slipping or steel belt breakage.
