What's the Difference Between Heavy Duty Clamps and Ordinary Hose Clamps? Large Diameter Pipeline Sealing Solution

Release time:2026-07-13
In large diameter pipeline connections, turbocharged pipelines, high-pressure water supply and drainage and other working conditions, ordinary German and American hose clamps often cannot meet the sealing requirements. At this time, heavy duty clamps are needed. Many people are not very clear about the difference between heavy duty clamps and ordinary hose clamps. Today, as a professional hose clamp manufacturer, TJBC will explain in detail the advantages and application scenarios of heavy duty clamps.

Why Can't Ordinary Hose Clamps Solve Large Diameter Sealing?

Ordinary German type and American type hose clamps usually have a single bolt design, with steel belt thickness of about 0.5-0.8mm. This design is sufficient for small diameter (below 50mm) pipelines, but on large diameter pipelines, there will be three problems:
First, insufficient fastening force. The single bolt design on large diameters will cause uneven force on the steel belt when locking, and the place far from the bolt will have insufficient tightness, which is easy to leak;
Second, insufficient steel belt strength. Large diameter pipelines require greater locking force, and ordinary steel belts are easy to deform or even break when locked with great force, unable to provide sufficient sealing pressure;
Third, poor compensation ability. When the pipeline expands and contracts due to temperature changes, ordinary hose clamps have no compensation amount, which is easy to cause loosening and leakage.

Core Advantages of Heavy Duty Clamps

Heavy duty clamps, also known as European type heavy duty clamps, T-bolt clamps, are pipe clamps specially designed for high-pressure and large-diameter pipelines. They have three obvious advantages compared with ordinary hose clamps:
First is structural advantage. Heavy duty clamps adopt T-bolt + thickened steel belt design, the steel belt thickness is usually above 1.5-2mm, and some models have reinforcing ribs. When locking, they can provide 3-5 times greater fastening force than ordinary hose clamps, and the force is uniform around the entire circumference, without local loosening;
Second is good sealing performance. Heavy duty clamps have large fastening force, which can tightly press the rubber sealing ring on the pipeline interface, and will not leak even at pressures above 10bar, especially suitable for high-pressure pipelines;
Third is vibration and impact resistance. The locking structure of heavy duty clamps has anti-loosening design, which will not loosen under strong vibration and impact, especially suitable for harsh working conditions such as construction machinery, turbocharged engines, and mining equipment.
All heavy duty clamps produced by TJBC are made of 304 stainless steel, T-bolts are forged, with high strength and no thread slipping, specifications cover from 20mm to 600mm, and larger diameter large diameter hose clamps can also be customized according to customer needs.

Features and Application Scenarios of Spring Clamps

In addition to heavy duty clamps, another commonly used special hose clamp is spring clamp, also known as constant tension clamp. Spring clamps use the elasticity of spring steel to achieve fastening, no screw locking is required, installation is very fast, can be installed with a clamp pliers.
The advantage of spring clamps is that they can automatically compensate for thermal expansion and contraction and aging deformation of pipelines, always maintain constant fastening force, and will not loosen due to temperature changes and vibrations. They are especially suitable for scenarios requiring long-term stable sealing and large temperature changes such as automotive cooling systems and heater hoses. However, the fastening force of spring clamps is relatively small, so they are not suitable for high-pressure and large-diameter pipelines.

Selection Suggestions for Large Diameter Pipe Clamps

For large diameter pipeline connections, there are three points to note when choosing pipe clamps: First, pressure. Choose appropriate clamps according to the working pressure of the pipeline. For working conditions above 10bar, be sure to choose heavy duty clamps, do not use ordinary hose clamps to make do; Second, material. Choose 304/316 stainless steel for outdoor and corrosive environments, and galvanized heavy duty clamps can be selected for ordinary working conditions to reduce costs; Third, installation. When installing heavy duty clamps, pay attention to tightening the bolts evenly, do not tighten on one side to cause poor sealing.
