The following is a collation of the most common types of clamps/hose clamps on automobiles and universal, safe and practical disassembly methods, which can be used for car repair, teaching and data preparation.
I. Spring-Type Clamp (Hand-Pinched Type)
Most Common: Water pipes, air filter pipes, heater hoses
Disassembly Method:
1. Use long-nose pliers/clamp pliers to clamp the two "ears" on both sides of the clamp.
2. Squeeze towards the middle to increase the diameter of the clamp.
3. Keep the clamped state and directly pull out the hose or push the clamp to the smooth part of the pipe.
Key Points:
- Squeeze to the bottom when pinching, otherwise it cannot be loosened.
- For aged hoses, rotate left and right first before pulling to avoid tearing.
II. Bolt-Type Hose Clamp (Steel Strip Hose Clamp)
Used for water tank pipes, air intake pipes and exhaust gas pipes
Disassembly Method:
1. Use a cross/flat-head screwdriver/socket to rotate the screw counterclockwise.
2. Loosen until the hose clamp can slide easily; there is no need to remove it completely.
3. Push the hose clamp to the non-corrugated part of the pipe, then pull out the hose.
Key Points:
- For rusted screws, spray rust remover; do not forcefully twist to avoid slipping.
III. American/European Heavy-Duty Clamp (Heavy-Duty Type)
Trucks, heavy-duty trucks, large-diameter hoses
Disassembly Method:
1. Use asocket wrench to loosen the nut/bolt.
2. Fully open the clamp and remove the clamp or retreat to the pipe end.
3. Remove the hose after it is loose.
IV. Disposable Ear-Type Clamp (Single-Ear/Double-Ear Infinite Clamp)
Fuel pipes, transmission cooling pipes, commonly used in original factories
Disassembly Method:
1. This type is disposable and basically scrapped after disassembly.
2. Use ear-type clamp pliers to flatten the ears, or cut the clamp strip with diagonal pliers/cutting machine.
3. Remove it directly after cutting.
Key Points:
- Must be replaced after disassembly; cannot be reused.
V. T-Bolt Clamp (T-Type Clamp)
Large diameter, high pressure, heavy-duty vehicles/engineering machinery
Disassembly Method:
1. Loosen the T-bolt with a socket.
2. Open the clamp and remove it as a whole.
3. Tighten evenly diagonally during installation.
VI. General Safety Notes
1. Operate when the engine is cold to prevent scalding and liquid spraying.
2. Relieve pressure before disassembling fuel and high-pressure pipes.
3. Replace aged hoses directly with new ones; do not pry hard.
4. Install the clamp back in its original position as much as possible to avoid liquid or gas leakage.
